A Little TL?
Suzuki SV650X

For '99 Suzuki will in fact be bringing their new 650 twin to the States. The bike looks much like a downsized version of the TL1000S and it is powered by a 650cc 90 degree V-twin.

The biggest difference between the two bikes other than size is that the SV has a conventional rear shock and linkage.

The SV's frame is unique to the bike but it looks, at a glance, very similar to the TL-S frame. It is a lightweight aluminum truss design and the bike's seating position is similar to that of its bigger brother. The seat is not particularly low but its narrowness should help allow shorter riders to reach the ground. A square-tube aluminum swingarm locates the rear wheel and it is controlled by an adjustable shock absorber that has seven preload settings. Up front the forks are 41mm and the brakes are dual discs. The rims at both ends are cast aluminum.

The engine in the SV650 is based on the 1000cc TL unit and it is a double-overhead-cam, liquid-cooled, V-twin with 4-valves per cylinder and a lightweight chain drive for the cams.

The engine has an actual volume of 645cc and, to help it generate strong low-to-mid rpm power, the engine has a pair of big 39mm downdraft carburetors and a stainless steel 2-into-1 exhaust system. The bike is driven by a six-speed transmission.

The SV650X is priced at $5,699, which is close to the 600 Bandit's sticker, presenting entry level riders another choice of an inexpensive 600. Inexpensive and distinctive, that is. Rumor has it that the SV will be available to dealers by the beginning of the year so we hope to have a full test on it soon.

The rear seat pad of the SV can be removed for access to ample storage room just like with the TL-S. The U-lock shown is an available accessory. As you have probably guessed by now, the SV is available in either red or blue.
